U.S. Orders Citizens to Depart Iran Immediately
The formal travel advisory instructed U.S. citizens to closely track local media developments and coordinate directly with commercial airlines regarding available departure flights out of the country.
For Americans unable to secure air travel, the advisory outlined several overland exit routes through Armenia, Türkiye, and Turkmenistan. However, it cautioned that Azerbaijan's land borders remain sealed to standard traffic and accessible only with prior government authorization.
The advisory carried an explicit warning that "U.S. citizens should not travel to Afghanistan, Iraq, or the Pakistan-Iran border area," further alerting travelers that Iranian authorities retain the power to block departures or levy exit fees against American nationals.
The statement additionally flagged serious concerns for U.S.-Iranian dual nationals, noting that Tehran refuses to acknowledge dual citizenship and will treat such individuals exclusively under Iranian law. Americans remaining inside Iran face "significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention," the advisory cautioned.
Those unable to secure any departure route were instructed to shelter in place and maintain distance from windows.
The warning emerged amid a fragile regional ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, extended Tuesday following a diplomatic intervention by Pakistan's prime minister and army chief. President Donald Trump announced the truce would hold until Iranian leadership formally submits a new proposal to resolve the conflict, which has drawn in Gulf nations across the broader region.
