US Calls on Citizens to Leave Iran Without Delay Amid Airspace Changes

(MENAFN) The United States has urged its citizens in Iran to leave the country without delay following the partial reopening of Iranian airspace on April 21, according to reports.

The advisory called on Americans to closely follow local media updates and check with commercial airlines for possible departure options as flight availability begins to resume in limited form.

For those unable to travel by air, the guidance outlined possible land exit routes through Armenia, Türkiye, and Turkmenistan. It also noted that Azerbaijan’s land borders remain closed to regular travel and require special government permission.

The statement further warned US citizens against traveling to Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Iran-Pakistan border region, citing heightened security risks. It also cautioned that Iranian authorities may restrict departures or impose exit fees on American nationals.

In addition, the advisory stressed that Iran does not recognize dual citizenship, meaning US-Iranian dual nationals are treated solely as Iranian citizens under local law. It warned that Americans in the country face a “significant risk of questioning, arrest, and detention.”

Those unable to leave have been advised to remain sheltered and avoid exposure near windows.

The warning comes amid continued regional instability following a two-week ceasefire in the US-Israeli conflict involving Iran, which was recently extended after diplomatic intervention.

Reports said the extension followed a request from Pakistan’s leadership, while US President Donald Trump indicated the truce would remain in place pending a new Iranian proposal aimed at ending the broader conflict affecting the region, including Gulf states.
